“Jeg elsker Denmark”
Monday night was particularly awe-inspiring for the participants of CBS CC 2009. That evening they attended the official CBS Case Competition Welcome Dinner, held at the Carlsberg Museum with HRH Princess Marie and HRH Prince Joachim and ambassadors or representatives of each participating country as guests of honor.
- I liked Princess Marie a lot; I feel we really connected… seriously though, I thought last night was fantastic and so well organized. I got to try all the different Carlsberg beers and have already learnt the Danish word for it: Øl! joked Luke Bulling, a participant from the University of Auckland.
His teammates, Kate Haywood talked about how much the participants have enjoyed Copenhagen so far:
- It’s a lovely city, and we have been having a lot of fun together – interacting with the other teams. Right now the atmosphere between teams is really nice, but that might change after we get the case tomorrow.
Training the Elite
After a night of wining, dining and crazy partying till the wee hours of the morning, the teams turned up at Kilen looking fresh as daises for their morning session. The first keynote speaker was Danish entrepreneur Morten Wagner, one of the founders of Freeway, the private company that owns large websites and portals in Denmark such as dating.dk. He spoke about online businesses and its challenges and was followed by Thomas Schmidt, partner from McKinsey & Company who spoke about why it is important for companies to continue to grow even in the present global downturn and how to do it.
Just sitting in on the session with the participants makes one realize why they were selected. They kept the keynote speakers on their toes with a barrage of insightful questions. Matthew Hobbs, a participant from the University of Florida was very pleased with the discussions:
- It was very useful. I think I was able to get some good ideas for structure for the case when we know which company we are dealing with.
Guessing the case?
And indeed, that is the question on everyone’s mind – what case will they be dealing with? Speculations are rampant. Lai Wai Kit, from the National University of Singapore discussed the possibilities:
- It could be anything from food to online business. It’s really hard to say.
Tomorrow is the big day when the case will be revealed and teams get underway trying to crack it. To find out more about the theme and the actual case when it is revealed, check out the website.
