Fewer rooms than applications
Ms Robin Jensen, Director of International Programs at CBS, explains that the International Office at the moment administrates 525 rooms. Students from CBS going abroad and others who rent out private accommodation add to the pool. Meanwhile 838 new international students at CBS have applied for accommodation.
- One of our assistants is working very hard to add more private housing by advertising in Den Blå Avis (the major Danish online marketplace, now owned by eBay) and selected local newspapers, says Robin Jensen. So far this effort has added 90 rooms to the pool.
No help for the freemovers
The Director cannot say how many international students will be without a roof over their head when they arrive in Denmark, but the ambition is to supply housing for as many as possible of the 619 exchange students this semester start and the 193 new full time students – while the 26 freemovers to CBS have been told that CBS will possibly not be able to help them at all.
- But it is impossible to say how things work out, since it all depends on the ad campaign and how many of the students say no the offered accommodation. The first round of refusals allowed 35 people from the waiting list to move up. We still have 777 students without accommodation and only 615 available rooms, says Robin Jensen.
20 more rooms from the 1st of October
From the 1st of October CBS can take another 20 rooms into use at the new Hedorfs Kollegium near Flintholm Station (one to three stops away by Metro ).
- We can use these rooms to help another 20 students. The challenge will be to find them temporary solutions until then, says Robin Jensen.
Appeal to help with accomodation
Hence she appeals to CBS’s staff and students to consider if they can help with either temporary or permanent accommodation for future students at CBS. Bonnie Nielsen at the International Office is the person to contact.
If CBS cannot supply rooms for the international students they could end up in youth hostels as a temporary solution – or even worse, cancelling their stay in Copenhagen.
