As the participants worked feverishly through the day, huddled in their group rooms, CBS students had an equally busy day. All through Thursday, CBS students were able to meet and hear some recipes for business success from the sponsors of the CBS Case Competition.

Starting from the early afternoon, students were able to attend a series of 3 seminars and workshops with Ernst & Young, Danfoss and Ecco. All the events revolved around the main theme for the week of Seasoning Business.
Christian Aarosin from Ernst & Young talked about ‘What spices does it take to get the right valuation of your company?’ He explained to a packed auditorium about what the key drivers of valuation are and how they have been affected by the current financial crisis, narrating examples of actual problems brought in by clients.

Prediction workshop with no crystal ball

This was followed by the ‘Predicting the Future workshop’ by Danfoss. Despite the name, it wasn’t a session with a crystal ball, but rather a very hands-on, interactive workshop on strategy and scenario planning. Chief strategy and business development advisors from Danfoss, Philip Baxter and Frank Radich discussed the difficulties of strategic planning in turbulent times and how scenario planning can work to question the very assumptions on which strategies are based and prepare for the unpredictable. Students were then given the opportunity to prepare scenarios for what the US would look 10 years from now and the different groups developed very different futures.

Ride the wave of LEAN

Following this, CBS students heard from Ecco about ‘How to ride the wave.’ John M. Knudsen, VP Business Development told students about how Ecco has effectively implemented the LEAN program in their production. Students engaged in a lively discussion of Ecco’s strategy and the LEAN concept.

Could these be seen as an appropriate prequel to what some of the Case Competition teams will present tomorrow? The 3 finalists will present tomorrow, Friday, 27th February, 2009 at Solbjerg Plads, SPs01 at 14:00-17:00 and the event is open to all students.
