Lower voter turnout at this year's CBS elections - but was it that low?

The numbers do not add up in relation to this year's CBS elections. The Elections Secretariat is now taking a closer look and CBS OBSERVER will report back as soon as the error has been detected.

As the polls at the CBS elections closed at 2 pm on Friday November 21st, the official voter turnout for the elections was registered at 23.21 percent. Thus, this year’s voter turnout fell short of the turnouts of the previous 3 years. However, something does not add up.

According to the CBS Elections Secretariat, only 23.21 percent of CBS students chose to cast their votes in the elections for the Study Board, the Academic Council, and the Board of Directors.

However, a closer look at the numbers reveals some discrepancies.

In 2013, 5,475 students cast their votes, which amounted to 27.55 percent of the 19,873 registered voters.

Fewer votes were cast this year as only 5,419 CBS students chose to vote; this number equals 23.21 percent of this year’s 23,344 entitled voters.

It is a fact that the student body at CBS has increased compared to last year, but not by as much as 3,471 students, a number put forward by the Elections Secretariat.

This discrepancy has been pointed out by CBS Students and the Elections Secretariat is now taking a closer look at the numbers.

Thus, CBS OBSERVER anticipates the findings of the Elections Secretariat before making any final conclusions on this year’s actual voter turnout.

However, it is certain that the voter turnout was lower at this year’s elections compared to previous years.

It is the second year running that CBS has registered a decrease in voter turnout, and even if this year’s actual turnout is slightly higher than what the Elections Secretariat has reported during the elections, the turnout for the CBS elections is nowhere near the turnout RUC registered this year… or CBS’ own record registered in 2012, for that matter.
